About 350,000 vehicles are expected to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge over Labor Day weekend, according to the Baltimore-Maryland Department of Transportation.
With heavy traffic like this expected on both the Bay Bridge and the Nice/Middleton Bridge in Charles County, officials are advising Maryland drivers to avoid traveling during off-peak hours whenever possible.
Expect more eastbound traffic on September 1-3 as people move to the beach and coast, and more westbound traffic on September 4-5 as people head home. MDTA will conduct two-way operations to reduce eastbound traffic flow, weather permitting.
According to the agency, the best times to cross the Bay Bridge are:
• Thursday, September 1 - before 10am and after 9pm • Friday, September 2 - before 8am and after 9pm • Saturday, September 3 - before 8am and after 4pm • 9 Sunday 9th of May - before 8am and after 9pm • 4 – Before 11am and after 9pm Labor Day Monday 5 September – Before 9am and after 10pm • Tuesday 6 September – Before 7am and after 6pm
According to the MDTA, travelers can also bypass the Bay He Bridge altogether by using Interstate 95 to cross the Susquehanna River and arrive at their destination.
