Technology giant Google makes it easy for developers to create apps that work on Android and non-Android devices. We announced a new cross-device software development kit (SDK) that enables developers to build rich multi-device experiences using a set of simple and intuitive APIs.
Cross-device software is available in developer preview for Android phones and tablets. It supports up to Android 8 version. This software will be available later for Android Surface and non-Android operating systems.
According to Google, cross-device SDK software allows developers to do many things with their apps. First, such apps will be able to detect nearby devices. Then you will be able to establish a secure connection between your devices. According to Google, the SDK software uses his WiFi, Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband to provide multi-device connectivity.
"The Cross Device SDK provides a software abstraction layer that handles all aspects of cross-device connectivity leveraging wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and ultra-wideband," reads the Google post.
Google has listed several use cases for the app to work across devices, and says the app will enable users.
- Detect and approve communication with nearby devices. - Share the app's current status with the same app on another device.
- Launch the app on a secondary device without the app running in the background.
- Establish a secure connection for devices to communicate with each other.
- Enables sending tasks where a user can start a task on one of her devices and easily continue on another.
With this SDK, we can focus on what matters most: building engaging user experiences and connecting those experiences across different form factors and platforms,” he said. Additionally, apps don't need to declare or request runtime permissions for connection protocols, and users can allow apps to connect only to selected devices.
